Japan's Nikkei-225 was down 1.4 percent, Singapore's Straits Times lost 0.9 percent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng plunged 1.7 percent, China's Shanghai Composite index declined 1.3 percent and South Korea's Kospi fell 0.9 percent.
